How to Butterfly Click
Butterfly clicking means alternating your index and middle fingers on the same left mouse button, like drumming, so each finger only taps at half the speed. Rest both fingertips on the button, tap one-two in an even rhythm and keep each tap short. Practised players reach 12 to 20 CPS, depending heavily on the mouse.
Step by step
- Rest your index and middle fingertips side by side on the left button. Your ring finger takes over the right button if you need it.
- Keep your palm in light contact with the mouse so it does not move when you tap.
- Tap with the index finger, then the middle finger, in a steady one-two rhythm.
- Keep both taps short and light. Lift each finger only as far as the button needs to reset.
- Build an even rhythm first, then speed it up. Uneven taps land too close together and get merged.
Typical result once practised: 12–20 CPS (community-reported ranges, not a controlled study).

Practise it right here
The test below starts on your first click. Watch the trace: even, evenly spaced spikes mean the technique is working; clusters followed by gaps mean taps are being merged or your rhythm is breaking.
Click trace: each spike is one input, its height the instant rate; the line is your rolling 1-second CPS.
Your runs here count toward the same personal best as the full butterfly click test page.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Both fingers landing at once | Taps inside the mouse debounce window count as one. Slow down until the trace shows evenly spaced spikes, then speed up. |
| Moving the mouse while tapping | Anchor the palm and thumb. Movement wrecks aim in a real fight. |
| Tapping from too high | Long finger travel costs time. Keep the fingertips a few millimetres above the button. |
Does your mouse matter?
- A short debounce is the biggest factor: long debounce windows swallow the second tap of each pair.
- A wide left button gives two fingers room to rest comfortably.
- Light, crisp switches reset faster under quick alternating taps.
Check your switch with the double click test and your sensor with the polling rate test.
A 5-minute drill
- Two slow 10-second runs, aiming for an even trace rather than speed.
- Three 5-second runs at full speed, comparing registered clicks with how fast you feel you tapped.
- One 30-second run to check stamina.
High-speed clicking is a repetitive strain. Stop at pain, not after it.
Questions
Why does butterfly clicking not work on my mouse?
Most likely the debounce: the mouse ignores presses for a few milliseconds after each click, so the second finger is lost. Some mice let you shorten it in their software.
How many CPS is butterfly clicking?
Players commonly report 12 to 20 CPS on 10-second tests. Your result depends on rhythm and on how many taps the mouse registers.
Is butterfly clicking easier than jitter clicking?
For most people it is less tiring and easier to aim with, because it uses two relaxed fingers rather than a tense forearm. It takes a while to get the rhythm even.
Is butterfly clicking allowed?
Many servers allow it, but some flag very high CPS or ban double-clicking mice in PvP. Check the server rules.
