APM vs CPS

CPS measures one button at full speed; APM counts every input from both hands. 10 CPS of pure clicking already equals 600 APM, which is why spam tests show numbers far above real match APM. In a game, a typical action is a hotkey, a right-click move or a camera jump, spread across many keys. Train raw speed here, then work on making each action count. For one-button speed, use the CPS test; for one key, the spacebar test.

Questions

What is APM?

Actions per minute: every mouse click and key press you make in a minute. It is the standard speed stat in real-time strategy games like StarCraft II and in MOBAs.

What is a good APM?

Casual RTS players often sit somewhere around 40 to 100 APM, experienced players 150 or more, and professional StarCraft players commonly 250 to 400 in games. A test like this, which counts raw spam, reads higher than in-game APM.

How does this APM test count?

Every mouse button press on the pad and every key press (key repeat from holding a key is ignored) counts as one action. APM = actions ÷ seconds × 60.

Does high APM make you better?

Only when the actions are useful. Coaches talk about effective APM (EAPM), which strips out repeated spam. Use this test to warm up your hands, not as a skill rating.
