Spacebar Speed Test

Hammer the spacebar. A timed test gives you presses per second; the counter mode just keeps counting until you stop.

Click trace: each spike is one input, its height the instant rate; the line is your rolling 1-second CPS.

On a touch screen, tap the test area instead. Key repeat from holding the bar down is ignored.

Why spacebar speed matters

In games the spacebar is jump. Fast, even presses help with bunny hopping, jump-resets in Minecraft PvP to cut knockback, and rhythm games that map notes to space. It is also a quick way to check that a keyboard's spacebar stabiliser is not sticking.

The spacebar is heavier than other keys because it is long and balanced by a metal stabiliser, so a clean, short press matters more than force. If presses keep dropping, try the keyboard tester to see whether the key registers reliably.

Pressing faster

  • Use the side of your thumb and keep it resting on the bar between presses.
  • Press near the centre of the bar, where the stabiliser gives the most even travel.
  • Try alternating both thumbs. It works like butterfly clicking and can add 2 to 3 presses per second.
  • Keep your wrist floating so the movement comes from the thumb joint, not the arm.

Questions

How does the spacebar speed test work?

Press the spacebar as fast as you can. The timer starts on the first press and your score is presses per second. Holding the key down does not count; only fresh presses do.

What is a good spacebar speed?

Most people press the spacebar 5 to 7 times per second. 8 or more is fast, and some players using two thumbs alternately reach 10 or above.

What is the spacebar counter mode?

Counter mode has no time limit. It simply tallies every press until you press Stop, which is handy for challenges or for checking that the key registers every press.

Can I do this on a phone?

Phones have no physical spacebar, so tap the test area instead. Each tap counts as one press.
